Inducing Labor, Naturally

When you’re past your due date, and especially if pregnant with twins, the only thing you can think about is giving birth; you feel as if you can’t possibly move just one more inch. With the OK from your health care provider, there are ways that may help induce labor naturally. Here are a few ideas (though we can’t promise they will work!):

Take a walk. This may help your babies drop into proper position. Exercise is always a healthy choice.

Acupuncture or massage. Relaxation is key. Massages and more attention to your body may be just what you need. Just Mommies recommends trying pressure points on the roof of your mouth, between your pointer fingers and thumbs, and above the ankle.

Have sex. You may be saying “Oh no, not a chance, no way, not happening, look at me!” but truth be told — it helps. WebMD says to make sure you have the green light and that your water has not yet broken. Researcher Terry Harper, M.D. points out:

“It [sex] creates a prostaglandin release, which is similar to the medications we use for inducing labor. Because no harm comes from it, it is reasonable to try.”

Particular foods. There are many lists out there that tell you to try spicy dishes or Chinese food. It’s not a guarantee, but worth a try, no?

Swimming. The movement and water might help to bring the babies out. Swimming may also alleviate some of the pressure you may be experiencing.

Visualization. HubPages adds visualization exercises to their top list, saying that many women swear by these. They recommend trying to make a recording of yourself talking about the baby moving down, preparing to be born, or even just imagine it in your head.
